Red-shafted Flicker, oil and metallic pigment on gelatin silver print, montage with photograph by Glenn Harris of his hand, 24 x 20 inches, 1995

My deepest soul-felt scream, a voice I didn’t know I had, came holding Glenn at his death, his struggle from AIDS ending.  Amazing Grace is my own healing. Each image is an individualized questioning and meditation of the on/off intersection of Life and Death. The main essence is a single dead bird, enlarged, delicate and beautiful, inviting close examination. The bird is joined by three boxes like ideograms in a natural history museum referring to essential elements—here personal references of departed friends.

Although the montages are highly personal, their presence is iconographic. As a studied individual can represent an entire species, these individual expressions point toward a universal icon.
