Oriole Nest with Arapaho Ghost Dance Symbols, oil on gelatin silver print with pencil, 20 x 16 inches, 1997

The nest is a place of home, holding vulnerable new life. The nest was womb and vessel, cushioning and insulating. Protection is promised from wind and rain; the structure is also a hiding place from enemies. The nest is a beginning, wherein security and nurture allow for the development of new life.

The nest is a metaphoric. It is a point of departure, a place to fall out of or fly away from. Will I have wings? Will I fly unafraid and know singing as the way to identify my territory? Also a place to return to, the nest and the garden offer a meditation for life and its journeys.
